In a rare occurrence, her father pursued legal action against the perpetrator, leading to a long and humiliating trial during which Artemisia herself was subjected to questioning. Eventually, her attacker was sentenced to exile. Artemisia became the first woman to be admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Paula Modersohn-Becker, a German artist, had a deep love for painting and painters. She was friends with Rilke and married a painter herself. However, she wasn't particularly fond of being married. Perhaps she desired to have a child. Tragically, she passed away in her bed just a few days after giving birth to her baby, with her last word being "schade" meaning "too bad" or "what a pity".

The reasons for my accusation are well-known. It is due to my defense of the rights of young women on Enghelab Avenue who protested against the compulsory wearing of the veil and expressed their dissent through peaceful and open means. After my arrest, my husband and a friend were also arrested for distributing badges that read 'I contest compulsory veiling,' and each of them was sentenced to six years in prison. As for me, I have been sentenced to 148 lashes and 38 and a half years of imprisonment, including 12 years for defending the young women of Enghelab Avenue... The freedom to dress for women is part of fundamental freedoms, and the development of democracy in society is contingent upon the development of women's rights.
These are the words of Iranian lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, expressing her thoughts on her own case and the importance of defending the rights of women.
